Play is indispensable for an adequate development of coping with social challenges in the rat
In this study, young rats were deprived of early social interactions during weeks 4 and 5 of life. Different behavior al tests were conducted in adulthood to study the behavioral responses of rats lacking ear ly social experiences. Juvenile deprivation resulted in decreased social activity and an altered sexual pattern, but did not affect locomotor activity or the performance in the elevated plus maze. Furthermore, behavioral and neuroendocrine responses of juvenile isolated rats were dramatically altered when they were confronted with territorial aggression. Juvenile deprived rats did not readily display a submissive posture in response to the resident and showed no immobility behavior after being returned to the resident's territory, while their plasma corticosterone and adrenaline concentrations;were significantly increased compared to nonisolated controls. In contrast, behavioral responses in the shock prod test were not affected by previous isolation. The results suggest that early social experiences are vital for interactions with conspecifics later in life, i.e., aggression, sexual, and social interactions; (C) 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc
Overexpression of the E2 ubiquitin–conjugating enzyme UbcH10 causes chromosome missegregation and tumor formation
An overabundance of UbcH10 disrupts mitotic checkpoint signaling as a result of a degradation of cyclin B, increasing spontaneous and carcinogen-induced tumor formation in transgenic mice

Insensitive HE EOS
A typical insensitive high explosive such as LX-17 has a large carbon-content and produces hydrogen fluoride (HF) as a detonation product. It is also characterized by slow energy release as indicated by a large curvature of the detonation front. We analyze these new physics issues which are needed to predict the performance of a insensitive high explosive. (U
Post-merger Signatures of Red-sequence Galaxies in Rich Abell Clusters at
We have investigated the post-merger signatures of red-sequence galaxies in
rich Abell clusters at 0.1: A119, A2670, A3330 and A389. Deep
images in u', g', r' and medium-resolution galaxy spectra were taken using
MOSAIC 2 CCD and Hydra MOS mounted on a Blanco 4-m telescope at CTIO.
Post-merger features are identified by visual inspection based on asymmetric
disturbed features, faint structures, discontinuous halo structures, rings and
dust lanes. We found that ~ 25% of bright (M_r < -20) cluster red-sequence
galaxies show post-merger signatures in four clusters consistently. Most (~
71%) of the featured galaxies were found to be bulge-dominated, and for the
subsample of bulge-dominated red-sequence galaxies, the post-merger fraction
rises to ~ 38%. We also found that roughly 4% of bulge-dominated red-sequence
galaxies interact (on-going merger). A total of 42% (38% post-merger, 4%
on-going merger) of galaxies show merger-related features. Compared to a field
galaxy study with a similar limiting magnitude (van Dokkum 2005), our cluster
study presents a similar post-merger fraction but a markedly lower on-going
merger fraction. The merger fraction derived is surprisingly high for the high
density of our clusters, where the fast internal motions of galaxies are
thought to play a negative role in galaxy mergers. The fraction of post-merger
and on-going merger galaxies can be explained as follows. Most of the
post-merger galaxies may have carried over their merger features from their
previous halo environment, whereas interacting galaxies interact in the current
cluster in situ. According to our semi-analytic calculation, massive cluster
haloes may very well have experienced tens of halo mergers over the last 4-5
Gyr; post-merger features last that long, allowing these features to be
detected in our clusters today. (Abridged)Comment: 16 pages, 15 figures, 7 tables, accepted for publication in ApJ

Aharonov-Bohm effect and resonances in the circular quantum billiard with two leads
We calculate the conductance through a circular quantum billiard with two
leads and a point magnetic flux at the center. The boundary element method is
used to solve the Schrodinger equation of the scattering problem, and the
Landauer formula is used to calculate the conductance from the transmission
coefficients. We use two different shapes of leads, straight and conic, and
find that the conductance is affected by lead geometry, the relative positions
of the leads and the magnetic flux. The Aharonov-Bohm effect can be seen from
shifts and splittings of fluctuations. When the flux is equal to (h/2e) and the
angle between leads is 180 degree, the conductance tends to be suppressed to
zero in the low energy range due to the Aharonov-Bohm effect.Comment: LaTeX2e, 8 pages, 6 figures, submitted to Phys. Rev. B (Two
